Garden Baskets

This week has still been very warm but the humidity has dropped so it's much better for weaving. Sometimes it's hard to get a basket to dry out completely in humid weather so I can pack them down nice and snug before applying the rims. There's lots of new ones finished this week though. A few simple ones like this garden basket ...

and some with flower garden inspired colors like this one...

The orange nasturtiums started blooming along with some purple Japanese iris!

Backyard Jungle

Gardening season is in full swing and the rain and high heat has turned my yard into a jungle! Every perennial and shrub is taller and lusher and bursting with blooms this year. A special treat is the hydrangea that has struggled the last couple of summers to bloom even a little. If the winters are cold with little snow cover the tips get frosted and there are no blooms. This year however is totally different. It's loaded with blossoms just starting to burst out. It is a Nikko blue hydrangea that got planted in the only spot in the yard that probably isn't acidic soil. I discovered a lot of wood/coal ash in the soil when I dug this bed up years ago. Now I get blue, mauve and pink blooms on the same shrub. BONUS!

A Natural Rush

....chair of course! I confess to having this chair on my to do list for far too long. It was hard to get a size match to the original hand twisted rush in the seat so I eventually went ahead with pretwisted rush I was able to buy and it turned out quite nice! I clamped along the back as you can see in the pictures to flatten the rush a bit so the back rail would fit snugly against the seat again. It worked!

The lable on the bottom says "Home of the Windsor Chair  (something) & Stone, Mass." so I'm guessing maybe Nichols and Stone who are still in the furniture business. The chair is reassembled but I managed to forget a picture at that stage. Here's the new seat at least. :)

If you're interested in learning about chair seat weaving check out Cathryn Peters site at  wickerwoman.com. It's the go to spot for all things chair seat weaving and wicker furniture repair. She weaves gorgeous baskets too!

Those Lupins

Managed to get one little basket woven with those lupin colors. It's a start and there are so many wildflowers yet to bloom this summer......so many more colors to weave with!

Colors of July

The roadsides are dressed in purples, pinks and mauve now that July is here. These lovelies are in the ditch in front of the studio so will be the color inspiration for new basket and felting projects.
