REcycled Wool Coat

There are always a few days by the end of February when the sun starts to give off warmth. You have to get in a spot protected from the other elements and stretch your face directly to the sun, but it's there. You close your eyes and think of the warm days to come and you relax a little. Your shoulders, after all, have been up around your ears since December bracing your chilly self against the winter. Yesterday was one of those days. After a brief stint in the previous mentioned position something kicks in and you feel like throwing old stuff out or cleaning a closet. I went for a little of both. The wool coats got slung on the clothesline to air out and I decided one of them was ancient and needed to go. Scissors in hand I salvaged what I could right there on the clothesline and left the carcass for the garbage can.

The red wool went in to a hot wash and then the dryer set on high. It got all fluffy and shrunk into a new stash for my felting projects.

The sun was beating in the kitchen window so I sat there to work on the first felting project from the wool. I started with a half sleeve and have three small pieces of felt to work with. This coat is going to go a long way. It served it's purpose as a warm coat for many years and will get a new life as accessories!

What do think of my tiny little owl? He will keep an eye on your glasses for you!

Floral Sunshine

For the price of a coffee break I brought home this little pot of sunshine.

One bloom was open when I picked it up and the second one opened today. There are lots of buds so at this rate I'll have a week or more of new flowers. They are Tete-a-tete narcissus which are tiny size in the daffodil world. I can fool my February brain into thinking it's spring if I stare at these little beauties. Sure do like the greenhouse folks!

It's the Cabin Country Life for Me!

Get to your newsstands and pick up the April 2011 issue of Cabin Life magazine. My baskets are in an article! It is an absolute delight for my work to be included in an article about Northeast Country Art. There is no doubt about being in excellent company! I am thrilled!!!

It's a good day in the northeast! My excitement about the April issue aside,  Cabin Life is a beautiful magazine with fabulous country getaways and lots of things to do and see and eat while you're enjoying the great outdoors. There was a terrific article about the majestic moose in the Feb 2011 issue. If you love our Cape Breton country living, the magazine is a perfect fit.  Thanks again to Frances Sigurdsson and  Cabin Life.

Little Critters Workshop Added

The class for February 22nd at the Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design is currently full so we've added a second date of March 1 for the same little critter class. There a few spaces left in it so if you're interested call the Centre for details. We'll be making the rascally rabbit pictured above and get you started on some little sheep.

Felting Class

A quick report on the flower felting class. It went by so fast I didn't get pictures! Everyone worked furiously to get all of their petals made and attached together. Lots of beautiful color combinations and tiny details were put together to make blossoms. I think everyone went home with enough information and wool to play some more and perfect all of those little details they pondered in class. Hope any of the new felters that might be checking in on the blog enjoyed themselves. Feel free to email me questions if you're working on more blossoms at home. Thanks for joining the class. See some of you next week for critters!

Night Lights

Nature was at it's magical best last night.

The snow came down gently and covered the tree branches until they were transformed into feathery plumes. The snowflakes caught the flash from the camera making them look like little lights in the night sky.

There is high wind forecast so it will be gone as quickly as it came. Fleeting but beautiful.

Love Bugs Put to Work

The little bugs turned out to be great ring holders! It's part of the REfreshed display at the CBCCD gallery. I love it when something silly turns out to be useful. If you're in Sydney take the time to wander through the gallery. It's a great substitute for a walk through the garden in February! Stop and smell the roses (fresh paint). :)

Here's a virtual tour of part of the display if you can't get there.

Big Day Out

It was a perfect winter day here in Cape Breton so my partner in crime and I took to the snowshoe trail with a friend.

It occurred to me there's never a picture of yours truly on the blog. I'm always behind the lens. The snow was deep in the woods so we were happy to get to the river bed to walk on a firmer surface.

The tall guy on the left was tormenting the photographer a bit. Something about not cutting off our heads! She did a great job.

Studio season seems a long way away when you look at the snowbanks! Hope your having an equally good weekend. Cheers.

Help You with the Snowbanks?

Could take a while to get through the 20+ cm.

Just a little break in front of your snow shovel.

A big help from the Ginger dog.

It's A Basket

I didn't say anything about making serious baskets or big baskets or, well, serious baskets.
When cupcakes are on your mind they happen.

Mmm strawberries and sprinkles...

Vanilla cupcakes next I think.
