Exhibit Display

I finally got a chance to go in and see the Flotsam and Jetsam exhibit in it's final set up. Credit goes to Katherine Scott for the beautiful display of everyones work. All of the wonderful accompaniments to the pieces created for the show are from her days of beach combing. Check out this uncredible whale bone!

It sets the mood for the beautiful images in the handmade book by Katherine. Her wooden buoys were a perfect backdrop for Jaymes photo cards, all tied up with little shells. Each set is different and the wonderful images make them perfect for sending someone special a note.

The beaches here are great sources of creative energy and although it's nice to focus only on the natural beauty there is always the obvious impact we humans have on the ocean. The abundance of flotsam and jetsam we create really stuck with me and I had to create a junk trap to catch some of it. It's based on the eel traps that were traditionally woven by fisherman from withies or willow rods. The bottles and gloves and cans were just a small selection of the things that could be caught.

 

A more positive day of weaving produced a couple of pieces of that included some debris from fishing and I liked the effect the rope and nets had in the baskets and felt they belonged with the ocean celebration.

The display is very soothing in a way and yet full of fascinating little treasures from our shores. Definitely a celebration!
